Part VIII

Reference has been made to the ancient drainage patterns that drained the Great Lakes and which were the antecedents to post Wisconsonan drainage patterns including the Humber Watershed.

This illustration, displays the drainage channel from Georgian Bay to Lake Ontario, as well as a channel from Lake Simcoe through the Holland Marsh area, that joins this channel. (with both the Credit, Humber and Don River systems identified as C, H & DN)

J. W. Spenser was the first geologist to suggest the concept of a Laurentian River system as the main drainage pattern of the ancestral Great Lakes. (inset map)






More recent scientific evidence as seen in the map by OGS of Thalweg patterns in Southern Ontario, which supports Spenser's thesis. (a Thalweg is the fall line of a river course)







This concludes the section on Bedrock Geology of the Great Lakes and Southern Ontario, which confirms that the essential bedrock of Southern Ontario is | Upper Ordovician in geological age |. It is this canvas on which the future brushes and palette knives of continental glaciation created their topographic mural.
